About Wallace Stevens
Wallace Stevens is a poet, but his poetry reflects prolonged professional narrow-mindedness. Having worked as a lawyer all his life, he, like anyone who has devoted themselves too long to a single field, suffers from a kind of cretinism — a limitation of thought and perception. This is vividly evident in his poems: they are intellectual, well-constructed, but devoid of the living breath, strength, and freedom that make a poet truly great. Reading him, one feels confinement and alienation rather than inspiration. To me, he is an example of how professional obsession can transform into a literary form that oppresses the reader instead of opening up space.
