The Difference Between the Apostle John and Other
was one of the first followers of Christ. He occupies a special place among the chosen disciples of Jesus Christ. John was one of the three disciples whom Jesus especially drew close to Himself. He loved John for his meekness and gentleness, for his purity and virginal chastity. Everything that Jesus did that was especially important happened in John's presence.
Saint John the Theologian witnessed the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor. During the Last Supper, he reclined next to the Lord and, at the sign of the Apostle Peter, leaning against the Savior's breast, asked about the name of the betrayer. John accompanied Christ to the Garden of Gethsemane, where the Lord prayed in the last moments before His suffering; together with the Mother of God, Saint John was with Jesus during His crucifixion. Jesus entrusted Saint John with the care of His mother. And John faithfully fulfilled the divine testament; he took the Blessed Virgin Mary into his home and cared for her until her Dormition.
Under Emperor Domitian, the holy Apostle was subjected to cruel tortures, but the Lord preserved him unharmed. The emperor exiled him to the island of Patmos, where Saint John was granted a great Revelation about the fate of the Church, which he set forth in the Apocalypse.
After the death of Domitian, the Apostle John returned from exile to Ephesus, where he wrote one of the four Gospels. He also wrote three epistles and the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) - a mysterious, symbolic account of the future destinies of the world and the Church.
Saint John the Apostle died at the age of over one hundred years, outliving all the other eyewitnesses of the Lord and remaining for a long time the only living witness of the Savior's earthly life. He died a natural death, the only one of the Apostles who did not suffer a violent death at the hands of persecutors.
The circumstances of the Apostle John's death were unusual and even mysterious. Before his death, he withdrew outside Ephesus with seven of his disciples and ordered them to prepare a cross-shaped grave in the ground for him, into which he lay down, telling his disciples to cover him with earth. The disciples fulfilled his command. They covered the saint's face with a cloth and buried the grave. The next day, when they dug up his grave, it turned out to be empty.
