A Tiny Spider
(The Wonders of Nature)
One bright, sunny morning I stepped out onto the veranda. Hanging from the ceiling was a spider, a tiny little spider—one of those species that never gets very big. Nothing like the hefty black fellow creature that greets me every morning from the bottom of my bathtub.
I once read that you shouldn't kill spiders because they're an important part of the planet's ecological balance. So I leave them alone. Let them live alongside me in their own parallel world. We won't get in each other's way.
I held my hand up toward the dangling little spider. Perhaps sensing danger, it began twitching its legs and scurried upward along an invisible strand of silk. The little fellow wasn't stupid. He wanted to live. A perfectly natural desire—one shared by every living creature. Take a mosquito, for example. It lands on your hand, finds a comfortable spot, and gets ready for a nice little sip of your blood. But the instant I bring my other hand toward it, away it flies. No, it isn't a puff of wind carrying it off. It's the thought that its precious life simply must be preserved.
Can a mosquito actually think? Let's give the little pest the benefit of the doubt. I once wrote an entire philosophical treatise about that remarkable little insect.
My tiny spider is no less a wonder. Where did it come from? Certainly not from dampness or from some random jumble of molecules, but through reproduction, in which the male spider first courts the female (let's call her a she-spider), dances before her, brings her little gifts, and then deposits his seed in her reproductive opening. (It's hard to imagine reproductive organs that tiny when I could barely make out the spider itself in the bright sunshine.) After mating, the female typically eats her partner. Pregnancy is no easy business, and she has to stock up on nutrients. Mother Nature, in her wisdom, has thought of everything...
According to entomologists, spider silk is ten to fifty times thinner than a human hair and five times stronger than steel. A strand only one millimeter thick can support two hundred kilograms—about 440 pounds. With abilities like that, a spider puts humanity's engineering achievements to shame.
The wonders of nature? There are greater wonders still.
I look at my granddaughter and never stop being amazed. She is the very image of my mother—her great-grandmother. The same round little eyes. The same upturned little nose. Even the same gestures and little mannerisms. Almost a century later, one human being has passed unique physical and psychological traits on to another. How? By what means?
Through the union of a woman's egg, no bigger than a pinpoint, and a man's sperm—the smallest cell in the human body, invisible to the naked eye. Yet despite the microscopic size of those two elements, the child born inherits an astonishing range of characteristics from earlier generations, from eye color and the shape of the nose to behavior patterns and character traits.
Thus, an enormous amount of extraordinarily complex information is transmitted on something literally no larger than the tip of a needle. Even the latest computer technology doesn't come close. Who can say that isn't a miracle?
