Being Better Off
The changes taking place in many countries of Asia and Africa are almost startling. Two world – wars, progress in aviation, the development of communications, the interchange of students, increased travel abroad, all these have brought the nations of the earth so close together that in a real sense we are one world. The nations of Asia and Africa know far better than before what possibilities lie before them. They want to change the old conditions for better ones.
No one will question that many changes were and are needed. Those concerned for the welfare of mankind will rejoice in the awakening minds and growing desires of so many people. But a thoughtful person may wonder if all the change is for the better..
Dr. Stidger tells a story about the meeting of two famous men. One was Dan Crawford, an Englishman who had been a missionary in Central Africa for many years. He wrote a book, “Thinking Black”, which made a great impression on many people when I was a young man. The other was E.S. Thompson, an American who was in love with nature. As a boy I read some of his books, such as “Wild Animals I Have Known.” They were very interestingly written, giving an understanding and appreciation of nature and wild life.
Dan Crawford had returned to London. A group of men met together to hear him talk and ask questions. After the meeting one of them said to another, “Tonight I have Ernest Seton Thompson coming to my house. How about bringing the two men together?”
They did that. When Crawford and Thompson first met each other, they did not get along well together. But when they found out that both of them loved nature and had comparatively little use for civilization, they became very close friends and talked freely. IN that conversation, E.S. Thompson told of an experience he had in the U.S.A.
He had taken an Indian from one of the Government Reservations to the city of New York, to show him the wonders of that city. He showed him Brooklyn Bridge, and the walked over it. At that time it was one of the great bridges in the United States. At night he took him down “Broadway” where there were so many theaters, so many electric lights, that it was called the “Great White Way”. He took the Indian on the subway trains going underneath the surface of the ground. After he had shown the Indian the wonders of New York city, he took him back to the Grand Central station to return to his reservation. Then he asked the old Indian what he tough of New York city. The old man thought for a minute of two, then replied, “Mr. Thompson, where I come from we do not have great bridges crossing our rivers; we do not have the Great White Way to spoil the darkness of the night; we do not have trains that go under the ground or that go above the ground. But Mr. Thompson, we do have Peace of Mind”.
After Mr. Thopson had told this story, Dan Crawford told one. He said he was not accustomed to boasting of civilization but one time when he was about to return to England he did boast a little bit to an old Bantu. He said, “In my country we have ships that fly in the air. In our houses we turn a button and the room is lighted.” He said some more things about the wonders of civilization. When he was through, the Old Bantu asked, “Is that all?” Crawford replied, “Yes, that is all.” The Old Bantu then replied, “To be better off is not to be better.”
How true that is! “To be better off is not to be better.” With childlike simplicity the old Bantu chief stated a profound truth. One is reminded of Jesus’ words, “Man shall not live by bread alone.” In these changes taking place in so many nations, are the people also finding peace of mind?
The desire to be better off is often very commendable. The desire to be better one’s condition economically may be a very fine desire. Many of you are Chinese. I know why many of your parents or grandparents came from China to Malaya for I lived in China many years. There in Fukien, with the pressure of population in the cities of Foo Chow and Amoy, along part of the Hing Hwa coast where there were sandy, barren wastes, in Yung Chung where the mountainous area did not have enough rice land, the pressure of population was such it is no wonder that your grandparents or parents wanted to find a land where they and their families could be better off. That was a commendable desire.
I am not at all surprised that so many families from India sought a country where they could be better off. For the pressure of population in India is tremendous, and the difficulty of finding adequate food supplies in India is serous. Recently I read about the report given by a group of Ford Foundation experts who have been studying the problem of food in India. They gave their official report to the Government. The Population of India is growing so rapidly that unless India finds some way of increasing food supplies much more rapidly than they are now, the population of India will have increased by eighty million and the amount of food grown will be so small that millions of people will die of starvation. It will not be possible to move food from other nations to India quickly enough to save many of them from starving to death. That is the report of a group of responsible scientists to the Government of India.
The desire of the people of India to be better off is a reasonable desire. So I am no surprised that many of your ancestors came to a land like this. But I am wondering. I am wondering if in our efforts to better economic conditions, we are gibing adequate thought to the fact that bettering economic conditions does not in itself mean that we will be better people.
To be better off economically does not necessarily mean being better in character. Do we, living here in Malaya, realize with sufficient adequacy that “Man shall not live by bread alone?” That there are other things that we must have in order to have Peace of Mind and joy in our hearts?
A short time ago a delivery van came to our house. The mand travels all over this country selling goods. We asked him, “Do you go to church?” “Oh! I don’t have time. I am too busy to go to church! I don’t have time for that.” I know one man. His wife is a church member. His daughter is a church member. But he said, “I am too busy, I don’t have time for something like that.”
Peace of Mind is something that is important. To be better is just as important as being better off. “Man shall not live by bread alone.” There must be an understanding of God’s will, a desire to follow God’s will. We need to give ourselves to a purpose that is bigger than our ourselves toa purpose that is bigger than ourselves to find real joy and happiness in life. To be better off does not mean being better. Life is not measured by material things alone.
