                L';TOILE PERDUE

                THE LOST STAR
                For Our Lost World

Every era is convinced it is living through the most dangerous hours of its history.
And perhaps every era is right.
And yet one question has remained unchanged for millennia.
What allows a civilization to survive?
We readily answer: its economy, its army, its institutions, its technologies.
But History teaches us that powerful, wealthy, and flawlessly organized empires have vanished.
They possessed everything.
Except, perhaps, the essential.
Listening recently to Florence Portelli's intervention devoted to culture, I found myself continuing this reflection within.
And it became clear to me: a civilization does not die because it loses a battle.
It begins to weaken when it loses its horizon.
When each person looks in a different direction.
Some to the right.
Others to the left.
Still others simply wait for the light to turn green.
But who still looks toward the horizon?
When we lose our way in an unfamiliar city, a succession of directions often only deepens our confusion.
Turn right.
Then left.
Right again.
Straight ahead again.
But it is enough to climb to the summit — and the path suddenly reveals itself whole.
The road has not changed.
Only the gaze has risen higher.
Perhaps the same is true of civilizations.
For quite some time now, I have been working with Enheduanna — the first known author in the history of humanity.
I never wished simply to bring back to life a woman who lived four thousand years ago.
I do not wish for people to look at Enheduanna.
I would like them to learn to look as she looked.
For she herself was one of the first to choose her guiding star — the Power of the Word — in a world where everything demanded worship of the Power of arms and dominion.
She does not illustrate this thought.
She was one of its first voices.
For when a world becomes illegible, it is no longer enough to seek a new direction.
One must find a star again.
Every civilization has its stars.
None is eternal once we stop looking at it.
Culture is perhaps nothing other than this memory of the stars.
Sometimes it is considered a luxury.
A variable for budgetary adjustment.
Yet when culture and education are cut, History shows that we always end up spending more — repairing the fractures they might have prevented.

The hospital heals the body.
Culture heals the conscience.

Education teaches us to recognize the stars.

Literature gives us the word — the first remedy against the gangrene of indifference.

Theatre breathes life into that word — allowing us to laugh and weep together.

Music, like a universal world, allows us — as literature does — to dream alone, and — as theatre does — to marvel together.

This is why culture cannot be a mere embellishment of the soul.

It is perhaps the first fortress of a civilization.

And above all, its guiding star.
Perhaps we have simply forgotten to lift our eyes.
And perhaps this is where the true danger begins.
For a star does not always disappear.
Sometimes a civilization simply ceases to see its star.
