The empty chest
Not a legend. Not a fairy tale.
Real gold.
Thousands of coins, diamonds and ancient artifacts were said to have been hidden on an uninhabited island after a merchant ship sank during a violent storm. Nobody ever found the treasure. Over the decades, hundreds of people searched for it and disappeared.
Then, one rainy evening in London, John found something that changed his life.
His father had been dead for three years.
While cleaning out his father's old safe, John discovered a small black notebook hidden behind a false metal wall. Inside was a hand-drawn map covered with strange symbols, coordinates and one sentence:
“If you find the island, trust nobody.”
John stared at the map for a long time.
Then he smiled.
The treasure was no longer a legend.
It was a destination.
He needed a team.
The first person he called was Nikol.
Nikol knew Africa better than anyone John had ever met. He had spent years sailing along the African coast and could handle a small boat in almost any weather.
The second was Tom, an archaeologist and computer specialist. He could read ancient inscriptions and use sophisticated software to analyze historical maps.
The third was Renna, an IT expert who could break passwords and access computers that were supposed to be impossible to enter.
Four people.
One island.
One treasure.
And one enormous mistake.
They sailed for three days across rough waters.
On the fourth morning, Nikol suddenly pointed toward the horizon.
“There.”
A dark shape appeared through the mist.
The island.
There were no houses. No roads. No electricity.
Only thick jungle, black cliffs and a narrow beach.
They landed before sunset.
For two days they followed John's father's map.
On the third day, Tom stopped beside a huge wall of rock.
“Look at this.”
Carved into the stone was an ancient symbol identical to the one on John's map.
Behind the rock was a narrow opening.
A cave.
Their hearts began beating faster.
Inside, the walls were covered with strange markings. Tom examined them with his flashlight.
“This is it,” he whispered.
They went deeper.
Finally, they reached a huge underground chamber.
And there, beneath a layer of dust, stood an old wooden chest reinforced with iron.
John's hands trembled.
“We found it.”
Nikol laughed.
Tom began examining the chest.
Renna raised her phone and started recording.
John grabbed the rusty lock.
With one violent pull, the lock broke.
The lid opened.
Silence.
The chest was empty.
Completely empty.
John froze.
“What...?”
Inside there was nothing except a torn piece of cloth.
Then he noticed something carved into the bottom of the chest.
A message.
He read it aloud.
“IDIOT. WHILE YOU WERE DRAGGING YOUR ASS ACROSS THE OCEAN, I ALREADY TOOK EVERYTHING.”
Nobody spoke.
Nikol slowly looked at Tom.
Tom looked at Renna.
Renna looked at John.
John's face became pale.
Someone knew about the treasure.
Someone had arrived before them.
And whoever it was knew exactly what they were doing.
“Wait,” Tom said quietly.
He pointed at the floor.
Fresh footprints.
Not theirs.
Four pairs of eyes followed the footprints into the darkness.
John swallowed.
“We aren't alone.”
Suddenly, they heard a metallic sound behind them.
Click.
Everyone turned.
The entrance of the cave had been blocked by a huge stone door.
Nikol pulled out his knife.
“Who closed that?”
Nobody answered.
Renna slowly looked at the others.
“We have a bigger problem.”
“What?”
She held up her phone.
“There is a Wi-Fi signal.”
John stared at her.
“On this island?”
Renna nodded.
“And someone is connected to it.”
At that exact moment, her phone received a message.
Unknown sender.
WELCOME, JOHN.
A second message appeared.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
Then the lights in the cave went out.
And somewhere deep beneath the island, a machine started.

CLICK...
John realized that his father's map had never been a treasure map.
It had been a trap.
