Christopher Andrew, Vasili Mitrokhin The Mitrokhin Archive II.
Matryoshka
Between January and March 2026, VIGINUM detected seven information operations attributed to the Storm-1679 and Matryoshka IMSs, together constituting a foreign digital interference operation. These operations consisted in disseminating, via Telegram and X, videos of fabricated news reports impersonating several French media
Those participating in these demonstrations included not only Islamist extremists and Palestinian extremists but also Turkish right-wing extremists as well as German and Turkish left-wing extremists; these different groups had highly divergent motivations... What they all had as a common narrative, however, were antisemitism and hostility to Israel
hostility towards Israel and antisemitism serve as a bridge, i.e. this is where the ideologies of different extremist camps overlap

Why Is There a Palestinian Flag at a Protest About Diesel and Schools?
Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Limoges. On paper, the recent French protests are about fuel prices, overcrowded classrooms and a shortage of teachers. The Interior Ministry reports half a million in the streets nationwide, 110,000 in Paris, around 1,800 detained.
In the footage, something else. Palestinian flags marching next to yellow vests. In Marseille, young men storm a public building, overturn furniture and throw a bust of Marianne - the symbol of the Republic - to the floor. Some in yellow vests, others with Palestinian flags. French journalists report selective pogroms of Jewish shops, with precise lists of who owns what, reminiscent of Kristallnacht. The day before, Interior Minister Nunez warned that ultra-left groups were trying to push even authorized marches into clashes.
The anger of the French may be real. But why does a protest about diesel prices and teacher shortages end up with the flag of a quasi-state that has nothing to do with either diesel or schools?
You have to rewind half a century.
1. The Archive: KGB and the PFLP's External Operations
This is not a retelling of defectors. It is the Mitrokhin Archive.
Former KGB archivist Vasili Mitrokhin copied files for 12 years and took them to the UK in 1992. Together with Prof. Christopher Andrew he wrote The Mitrokhin Archive II: The KGB and the World.
The key episode:
In May 1970, KGB Chairman Yuri Andropov reported to Leonid Brezhnev that his organization "to a certain extent" controls the external operations of the PFLP, and Mitrokhin faithfully copied that memo.
The head of PFLP external operations, Wadi Haddad, is described in the same book as:
the godfather of modern terrorism Wadi Haddad received the code name "Nationalist" and was financed by the KGB, which also supplied him with weapons and gave instructions about specific targets.
Haddad was the pioneer of hijacking as political blackmail in September 1970 and the organizer behind Entebbe in 1976. Other notes found by Vladimir Bukovsky in 1992 in the Central Committee archive list Haddad as a "trusted agent of KGB intelligence" - the only foreigner who knew where the weapons came from.
In May 1975, according to Andropov's note to the Politburo, Haddad received 53 assault rifles, 50 pistols, some with silencers, and 34,000 rounds. Foreign-made weapons were transferred at night in the neutral waters of the Gulf of Aden from a Soviet intelligence ship.
2. The Institutional Frame
After the 1967 war, Soviet propaganda equated Zionism with fascism and imperialism.
1972 - Central Committee directive "On measures to combat international Zionism."
A permanent commission for the "scientific critique of Zionism" is created at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
1975 - UN Resolution 3379 "Zionism is a form of racism" passes with the Soviet bloc vote.
1982 - The same institute awards a degree to Mahmoud Abbas for a dissertation on the links between Zionists and Nazis in 1933-1945. The director at the time was Yevgeny Primakov.
The claim that in 1983 the KGB recruited Abbas as "Agent Krotov" comes from Israeli researchers citing Mitrokhin. No declassified document with a signature has been published, so this remains a research hypothesis, not an established archival fact.
3. Pacepa: Testimony vs. Proof
The most sweeping accusations came from former head of Romanian intelligence DIE, Ion Pacepa, who defected in 1978. He claimed that in 1972 the KGB launched Operation SIG and sent thousands of agents of influence into the Islamic world to incite hatred of the US and Israel, and that he personally handed Arafat about $200,000 a month in the 1970s.
There is no independent KGB documentary confirmation for SIG. So it is testimony, not proof. Its direction, however, matches what is in the Mitrokhin and Bukovsky archives.
4. The French Knot: Khomeini, Foucault, and the Left
From October 1978, for 112 days, Ruhollah Khomeini lived in Neauphle-le-Ch;teau near Paris. President Giscard d'Estaing officially granted him political refugee status against the warnings of his own intelligence services.
If France gave Khomeini a tribune, the left intelligentsia gave him an aura. Michel Foucault, the idol of the Western left, saw him as a "holy man." He wrote enthusiastic reports for Corriere della Sera and fell silent when the new regime imposed harsh restrictions on women. The Italian ultra-left newspaper Lotta Continua welcomed closed courts and executions.
The ideology of the revolution was also half-leftist. Its ideologue is considered not Khomeini but Ali Shariati, who combined Shiism with Marxism studied in Paris. Future Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei personally translated Sayyid Qutb's "Milestones" - a manifesto of Islamic revolution using the Leninist idea of a revolutionary vanguard.
The denouement: The Iranian communist Tudeh Party supported the Islamic Republic. It was handled by a KGB officer in Tehran. In 1983 the regime arrested more than a thousand of its members, about 200 were executed. Khomeini was hostile to communism, but even more hostile to America, and that suited Moscow.
5. The Mechanics: From Ideological Subversion to Matryoshka
In 1984, defector Yuri Bezmenov, from the APN, explained that 85% of Soviet intelligence work was not espionage but a slow process the KGB called ideological subversion, active measures or psychological warfare. The main point in his scheme: subversion goes on openly, as a legitimate social process.
Four stages: Demoralization (15-20 years, one generation of students), Destabilization, Crisis, "Normalization" - a new order. Bezmenov was wrong and exaggerated in many things, his predictions did not come true. But the method he described - teachers, journalists, activists instead of explosions - is exactly the doctrine of active measures.
What European services record today:
France - VIGINUM. The foreign interference watchdog reports:
Between January and March 2026, VIGINUM detected seven information operations attributed to the Storm-1679 and Matryoshka IMSs, together constituting a foreign digital interference (FDI) operation. These operations consisted in disseminating, via Telegram and X, videos of fabricated news reports impersonating several French media
The Matryoshka network is known for churning out fake reports imitating credible media brands. During the 2025-2026 French protests, NewsGuard found 20 fabricated reports in two days.
Germany - BfV. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution 2024 report describes exactly who marches together and why:
Those participating in these demonstrations included not only Islamist extremists and Palestinian extremists but also Turkish right-wing extremists as well as German and Turkish left-wing extremists; these different groups had highly divergent motivations for their mobilisation. What they all had as a common narrative, however, were antisemitism and hostility to Israel.
And its summary defines the principle:
hostility towards Israel and antisemitism serve as a bridge, i.e. this is where the ideologies of different extremist camps overlap. In pro-Palestinian demonstrations, protagonists from the field of secular pro-Palestinian extremism act as a link between Islamist extremists and leftwing extremists.
German counterintelligence formulates the key: such operations are built so they cannot be distinguished from the actions of local extremists, and the client benefits from the heightened debate itself.
6. Why This Flag
Israel is the perfect assembly point. Ancient antisemitism in an "anti-imperialist" wrapper sewn for half a century in Moscow institutes.
Insert this flag into any protest - about diesel, schools, pensions - and it stops being a protest about prices. It becomes a protest against the "system," against Israel, the West, and democracy itself.
