Rain
We barely made it to the doorway, drenched and soaking.
Streets popped umbrellas, windows slammed like drums,
Like gunshots, I remember. I toss and turn, trapped in a dream.
The wind breaks branches, but it's not yet a storm,
Though the safety line's almost torn.
When the world collapses to its core,
The rain won't wash the sins of those who let it roar.
Rain on the whole wide world — not just in Santiago's place,
Clouds shroud all of Spain, a dark and heavy trace.
Not the tears of men who gave their lives for liberty's cause,
Heroes stand firm — their fists stay clenched, they bear it all.
Rain — just a minute's rest, a stillness in the storm's embrace.
We'll wait this downpour out on shelter stairs,
It'll pass in half an hour, no need for prayers.
While there's time, let's kiss, I still remember how,
When the sun comes out, the world will stir again — I vow.
Everything is frozen, drains hum their watery tune,
Someone once played "Amur Waves" on them, to dance the afternoon.
There was a chess table in this yard, I saw it with my eyes,
But it burned last year in a fierce raid — ashes of goodbyes.
The final drops are tangled in the acacia's leaves, so still!
Thunder rumbles far away and the lightning's lost its will.
Now war is death that falls from every rain cloud in the sky,
And we're conditionally alive — just shadows, and the wind will blow us by.
And we still have to reach the other side of town,
Where sun plays with jeweled spray in fountains all around.
I'll show you the stage wrapped in calico, among the birches, hidden out of sight,
Where you played Bach's "Badinerie" for me that night, so bright.
Rain on the whole wide world — not just in Santiago's place,
Clouds shroud all of Spain, a dark and heavy trace.
Not the tears of men who gave their lives for liberty's cause,
Heroes stand firm — their fists stay clenched, they bear it all.
